Expressive Arts and Design
INTENT
IMPLEMENTATION
Imagination, CREATIVITY, self expression, ART, drama, DANCE, music, SONG
From sensory trays and treasure baskets, stimulating colours and shapes, a rich and varied media for artistic expression, to dance, song and musical instruments. We encourage all children to express themselves, show their creativity, personality and fully immerse in the moment.
We dive into DRAMA, we are training our imaginary dragons, helping a distressed bear find his way home and riding the waves of the high seas as pirates!
(take a look at our extra curricular activities page for videos)
We have rich and varied role play and small world resources, encouraging children to show great imagination and narrative to their play.
- To love and appreciate a wide array of music genres, from classical to pop.
- To express themselves freely through dance and movement.
- Explore the different sounds of their own voice and feelings through song and percussion instruments.
- To use their imaginations to play with small world toys and role play, making up stories and extending their learning.
- To be creative, designing, constructing and exploring with a wide range of media independently. Expressing themselves through Art, colour and textures.
- To be uninhibited, confident and imaginative in drama sessions and pretend play.

We observe colour changes in our environment during outdoor play. We collect items from nature to include in our art and craft work and are inspired to mix colours to match our natural landscape.
We learn how to draw and construct, using recycled items, breathing new life and meaning to their shapes by using our imaginations and creativity (and usually lots of masking tape!) Children are encouraged to develop their own ideas and produce drawings from their imaginations and observation, assigning meaning to their mark making.
We SING at every opportunity and accompany ourselves with musical instruments, we explore our voices and our bodies through sound and movement.
We learn to appreciate MUSIC from different genres and cultures, we move and DANCE with ribbons and scarves, we play games to music and we make music of our own too!
